If nothing else, it is better to do the compression before sending the data to the modem than to send all of that data and have the modem compress it. In addition, I shudder at the thought of trying to convince uPort unix/386 to talk to a modem at 56.8Kbps or whatever the interface rate would be. If their compression scheme *does* get a ratio of 3x, imagine what a PEP modem could do: 42Kbps around town... -- James R.
