Gish) I suspect that the true bug lies in eiffel. Emacs is starting your compilation on a pty when you invoke it from shell mode, but there is no login record in /etc/utmp for that pty. Something about the way ec looks for this information makes it think you logged in to that pty as root. Why does a compiler care who invokes it?
