I am an Assault freak. I have spent much time playing the thing wondering how the heck that rotation is done. My best guess right now is that since hardware line drawing seems a simple enough task one would use similar hardware to (instead of deposit values into the pixels in memory) actually scan the display memory along the "drawn" line rather than the normal orthogonal scan.
