I tried to mail replies to everyone, but every one "bounced" from sun.com. I guess either my maps are out of date or the Internet connections are still all screwed up so here is a summary of what I found out. In article <518@dover.uucp> sun!sunburn!dover!waters (Mike Waters) writes: > >1) Do you have to go through some high priced "registry" to use Smail? No - "registry" refers either to membership in one of the networks or a way to obtain a domain name. I think ours is .mot.com Smail 2.5 (the one we have) is available through several archives and is public domain. We got our copy from simtel20 via ftp from another machine. > >2) Does Smail allow the use of the comp.mail.maps? If not how does it >get updated? > Smail per se does NOT use the maps from news, but uses pathalias and one of the shell scripts to extract the map files. We use uuhosts and it appears to work so far (1 week). Basically once a directory of map files is created, you run pathalias and it creates a "from here to xxx" file for every destination in the maps. You DO need to get a copy of the maps from somewhere (approx 1Mbyte), since only UPDATES are sent out by the mapping project. A local UUCP site should have them. In order for others to find you you must register with the uucp mapping project as outlined in the comp.mail.maps README file, it also helps to post the info to news.{newsite,config}. Overall not too hard to do once you find out what to do. Again many thanks to everyone who sent me mail, I hope I have answered everyone's questions - incuding requests for "enlightenment". We WILL be trying smail in the near future. Our registry of "dover" has gone out - who knows if it will get through thoug! -- Mike Waters (for your EDIFication) Motorola SMART CAD Group - EDIF (ANSI/EIA std. 548) support Mesa, AZ ...!sun!sunburn!dover!waters OR moto@cad.Berkley.EDU
