It would probably be based on TCP/IP and some of the higher level protocols from the Internet(SMTP,FTP,NNTP...). It would probably initially be targeted to computer companies/universities/research facilities. The difference is it would be a private network and it wouldn't be nearly as restrictive about who joined it. I think something like this could be developed incrementally. First, start one that is local to Silicon Valley and then start one for the Boston area. Then tie the two together. Eventually the network could be extended to other countries. The company that provides the network could also provide archiving, and possibly other services. I think this would be useful since it would allow people to connect without having to go through a large bureaucracy and it would also allow more rapid change in the base technology. Is anyone out there working one this or at least think about it? Would a company like uunet, portal, ATT, Tymnet, or some other communications company be interested in such a project? BTW, if there are strong sentiments against discussing the subject in this newsgroup, maybe it could be moved to comp.misc.
