I notice that I think I need more information; just doing exactly what you said (both putting Workbench in interlace mode, then loading s:Startup-Sequence, as well as setting just Memacs into interlace mode then reading the file) didn't produce the effect you describe. (in other words, it worked here). What background tasks are you running ?
