I worked on a project where we built 3 custom computers to hang off the Atari serial bus, but it was a big hassle. It would definately be less expensive (esp. in the area of time) to buy one. However, if you really want to do this, then get hold of a copy of Atari's Hardware Techinical Reference Manual.
