What about X Windows?  Not the worlds best windowing environment (which is,
of course, the Xerox Development Environment :-), but a damn sight better
than GEM.  I've just got hold of Minix, and intend to investigate porting X
as a (very) background task over the next year (or two, or three ..).  I
expect that this will be a somewhat, um, non trivial task, but it could be
kind of fun in a masochistic sort of way.
