Kennedy Jr. & Associates, Pipe Creek, TX Lines: 24 I am running AT&T 386 UNIX on a no-name '386 clone. It works just fine but I am not able to shut it down to reboot itself other than from right in front of it. Since I operate it from remote I would like to find a way to reboot from remote. I'm aware of the restrictions imposed by the /etc/shutdown script but that's not my question. TFM says that run level 5 stops UNIX and goes to the firmware monitor, run level 6 reboots to the state defined by initdefault entry in /etc/inittab. As best I can tell neither does anything but stall the system in some odd state from which a front panel reset and fsck is the only exit. I don't think this is a case of the 3B2 man pages being shipped with 386 UNIX because the man page specifically mentions the 80386. Has anyone been able to use run levels 5 or 6 with any interesting results? My 3B2 books show that it really will go into it's firmware monitor, but of course the '386 doesn't have one. I know that there is a ROM BIOS vector that will cause a reboot and I have used it in DOS applications when I knew the only safe exit was to reboot. I don't know where it is or how to use it from UNIX though. Any ideas on that one? Thanks, -- Bill Kennedy usenet {killer, att, rutgers, sun!daver, uunet!bigtex}!ssbn!bill internet bill@ssbn.WLK.COM
