This was one of the changes in 6.0.2. On a Mac Plus & SE, if you choose the Simple Beep sound, it uses the old SysBeep implementation. One purpose of this is that the Sound Manager on those machines uses a timer that is also used by MIDI applications. Choosing Simple Beep prevents the two things from conflicting. A quick experiment seems to indicate that the System looks at the ID of the snd resource, and if it is 1, uses the old beep.
