Just about every workstation uses thin ethernet (cheapernet). This is because cabels are cheaper and hooking up new machines are simpler and cheaper. One typically uses thin ethernet to connect all workstations in a department. Thick ethernet can then be used to link these departemental nets together to form a large net, like a complete campus net.
