Yes, it should be easy, consistent and simple, but that doesn't mean you can't have pop-up menus or three-button mice. Why not have both? Main menus and pop-up menus. One button or multi-button mice. I would happily pay for a mouse with shift-click and command-click buttons. Confusing? Make them smaller and label them. It would be a real benefit to those people that *use* shift- and command-click, and would require only that novices learn to use the big, friendly, button (labeled 'push me' :-).
