No.  That's not the reason for using the PC bus.
The reason is simple -- cost of peripherals.
Where else can you get a floppy-disk controller for $25?
Or, a serial I/O card for $20.
If you go with some wonderful, non-PC bus, you end up paying
heavily for your "RS-232, Ethernet, and the like" cards.
