Syslogd sometimes, rather mysteriously starts consuming an inordinate
amount of CPU time, to the extent of driving up my load averages to
unbelievable levels on a single user 3/60 running 4.0. The only way I have
found (short of killing syslogd) is to reboot and the problem vanishes
--to reappear later.  Tell me people...am I going insane ?
