What about the anectdote that posted to "phage" about "a friend who works for some securities firm" (Pooh?) who found out that someone had reported the ftpd bug to the vendor (if Pooh, that'd be Sun) over a year ago ... AND THE VENDOR NEVER FIXED IT! A lot of places won't fix this bug because they don't trust anything their vendor doesn't provide. Or maybe the vendor did something that's on the verge of proprietary and you can't just plug Berkeley stuff in and go on. I've fixed the ftp&finger bugs here, had to have a small fight in order to be able to do it, and even told the other people on campus that it exists. Have they fixed it? Weeell... that would be telling. It doesn't work very well. Yes it works for those of us who have the time to interact with the network all the time. (Rather, are paid to interact with the network all the time). It doesn't work for "the rest of them". -- <-- David Herron; an MMDF guy <-- ska: David le casse\*' {rutgers, uunet}!ukma!david, david@UKMA.BITNET <-- <-- Controlled anarchy -- the essence of the net.
