The orbiter on the pad is pretty well protected; in fact, one of the
things that was done during the hiatus in flights was to add a set of
weather-protection shields to pad 39B.  (39A is out of service, possibly
permanently unless demand picks up.)  The SRBs and ET are less protected
but much tougher.
