In 1956 I was working on a computer programmed to play checkers (yes, with graphics), which was supposed to type out its communications such as "Your Move", "You have two minutes to move" "If you do not move within one minute, I shall claim the game." One day, the teletype line became noisy, and in the midst of plenty of cartoon-type swearing (#$$8N%#...etc), it said "Od's blood I shall claim the game." A little earlier, it had said "Swounds". Would you be convinced it was acquiring a mediaeval intelligence? -- Martin Taylor (mmt@zorac.arpa ...!uunet!dciem!mmt) (416) 635-2048 If the universe transcends formal methods, it might be interesting.
