         I would recommend reading "Window Systems Should Be Transparent",
by Rob Pike.  It appears in the Controversy Section of the recently
published Computing Systems (vol. 1, no. 3, Summer 1988).  Computing
Systems is the quarterly publication of the USENIX Association.


         This paper addresses numerous issues concerning the user interface
provided by windowing systems, including some discussed in comp.cog-eng
lately.  Having used mux (the windowing system for the Blit under Research
UNIX) for several years and now having to deal with other windowing systems,
I tend to agree with much of what Pike has to say.
