I'm told that there are several public versions of symbolics-loop-like macros floating around... none of them exactly right, but pretty close. You might want to check out the "iterate" package supplied with the PCL version of CLOS. It's easily extensible, well integrated with the standard CL iteration constructs, far more lisp-like than SMBX loop, and optimizes nicely. Sadly, there's not much documentation...
