Further to the recent discussion of Algol68, I would like to stick a small oar in (more a paddle really :-)). Algol68 compiler development is still going on here in the UK, a small company (I believe called Algol Applications) are developing an Algol68 compiler for 80x86 based computers, partly under contract from the RSRE (Royal Signals Research Establishment) and partly for commercial sale. The developers are aquaintances of mine who are studiously trying to wean me off C. They may yet convince me - but there are only so many hours... I must say that the code generated on a humble PC is impressive. This I believe is mainly due to the programmer putting a lot more information in the hands of the compiler than languages such as C allow, so a greater degree of optimisation is possible. I don't really know that much about this compiler, but if there is any interest I will endevour to find out. Andrew Bray.
