I goofed.  My bang path is ... uunet!mcvax!cs.vu.nl!ast
not ... uunet!mcvax!cs.vu!ast.

I sort of assumed that mcvax knew what country we were in, since we are 10 km
away and have a leased line to it.  Networks are not always as obvious as they
seem.
