Boo-boo-pucky. It's choked my modem up for a week so far. News has gone to
hell. All I see is one huge file being transmitted for half an hour, often
it's so big it encounters a checksum error and has to restart as a result
of accumulated line noise.

Tough. Use the U S mails. Or bring a modem in from home and use your phone.
