The Notes software is not really at fault, as it is being used at this site, 
and we are able to have both comp.sys.amiga and comp.sys.amiga.tech.  But
we are running BSD 4.3.

It is probable that the problem is that your OS only supports 14 char
file names and Notes saves each notes-file in it's own directory which
needs to have the full name.

News gets around this problem by storing the messages in a directory
structure comp/sys/amiga and comp/sys/amiga/tech instead of comp.sys.amiga 
and comp.sys.amiga.tech directories.
