Last spring, I had the idea to build a kickstart eliminator. I had only the schematics of the 1000, 500 and 2000 , not the hardware manual. I also knew that ready-available kickstart eliminators which can also be switched off can be bought and that they plug directly on the bus without any internal wiring, and that they allow the kickstart memory to be used for the system by addmem. I also knew that the ram-expansion of the 2000 A can be set to load kickstart into memory by a single dip switch for addressing. The RAM expansion slot of the 2000 A is the same as the bus of the 1000, so it must work with the signals on the bus. With this sparse knowledge, I thought (blue-eyed as I was) that the boot routine checked the upper or lower half of the last 512K for kickstart, and loaded Kickstart to memory in the other half if kickstart wasn't found there. (memory mapping in the schematics wasn't clear about kickstart, mirror image of kickstart etc.) So I simply tried out by building an Eprom cartridge with settable address and kickstart (correct copy |) in it; this worked to be read with basic in any free address space. But, of course, amy behaved in no way as I thought; it would neither boot nor show the WB requesting hand, no matter what address I tried. I read about the hacker method by CATS, but I do not want to loose the possibility of loading Kickstart. If I build something, it must be switchable. Can anybody help a poor naive would-like-to-be-one hacker? How do I get amy to recognize Kickstart ROM and leave its hands off Kickstart RAM? Does anybody have a kickstart eliminator board and could tell me how it works? (schematics?) (If addressing wasn't done by PALs, it would be much easier to read more from the schematics.) BTW, I have a PAL 1000 with multilayer board, no piggyback. It has sockets for KS ROMs, the boot ROMs in two of them; so it should also be possible to do something internally (but probably not switchable) without removing KS RAM, as this is on the main (and single) board. But it MUST work on the bus.... Any help would be greatly appreciated| Please send me personal mail, as I do not read this list due to its high volume. Burkhard
