It is quite futile to deal with all the various tape writing facilities that UNIX provides. My SE and I have never successfully traded programs using the tape drive. Couldn't there be just one program that understood the 9144 tape drive is brain damaged and took care of the extra processing? Perhaps this program could even be user friendly?
