There are some mode select pages that have options that should be set for optimal performance ( like, enable the cache ). Also, you can tell the drive to remap bad blocks when it finds them rather than having to handle that in the driver or formatter. This option is setable in one of the mode select pages. I don't know anything about SF&I ( I use my own formatter and driver ), but if you can't get it to set these bits, you could always write a program specifically for this purpose, or use something like SCSI Tool to issue the mode select commands you need.
