This is probably the same problem that used to occur on 386/ix and other versions. Some clone machines have parallel ports that don't work quite right w.r.t. interrupts. Eg: they aren't compatible with standard parallel ports, but not in a manner that causes DOS problems. It is possible to work around this problem (386/ix does now).
