A  X11, R2 toolkit question:

I am using command widgets to create "buttons" that can be
selected with the mouse for user actions.
I am centering the strings in the buttons.
I notice that as strings get longer, ther is more and more
white space surrounding the strings.
Why????
How can I find out how much white space there is since I
want very little white space between the button borders and the strings??
