I still believe that using a small number of GCs is the right choice, and the CLX interface is one attempt to make this reasonable on the client side. The Intrinsics mechanism of read-only GCs can be viewed as in conflict with this choice, and it would be interesting to give some more thought in this area, but in practice is does result in a small number of GCs.
