To auto-fill on RET or not to auto-fill on RET, that is the question.

  Why doesn't someone offer a patch that incorporates a user switch
  (variable) that allows each user to get the desired behavior.  I am
  sure this would be quite simple, especially given the number of users
  who so religiously have been arguing over this question.
