Actually, a very close approximation to a linearly perceptual space
can be obtained by converting the RGB values to CIELUV values.  This
allows use of mathematical averaging and distance metrics for closest
color matches.

CIELUV is defined in Supplement 2 to Publication 15 of the C.I.E., or
can be found in "Color Science" by Wsyzecki (sp?).
