Once again answering my own question... the problem is that I'm using "less" as my pager. The interaction problem is between less, elm, and getpass. My impression of elm, in general, is that it does not work well unless you use all of the builtins. Besides the problems encountered when using your own pager, it appears to be very difficult to do some basic things, like including text from a different mail message than the one you're replying to, unless you use the builtin editor. I may be wrong on this, but since I have to read the manuals in their original nroff form, it is difficult to tell if I'm missing something. I've sent syd a patch to create a new option, "lastscreen", which implements the change I mentioned about not requiring a after message display. If anyone wants it, send me mail.
