You would probably do better basing your work on 'smail'.  This
wonderful program seems to work on every unix system ever sold.
Smail is a contribution(?) of the network mapping project.  You
can pick up a copy of smail source from almost any archive site.

I understand that smail 3.0 is intended to be a replacement for
sendmail.  Release 3.0 is presently in either alpha or beta test.
