My hard disk seems to have become trashed, not letting me write
anything, and displaying "Validating" under the status field of info
output (and I assume that means it failed while validating, not that
it's actually doing anything right now).  So is there anything I can
do besides copying everything somewhere else and re-formatting (or
something?) the partition.  I don't want to reformat because that
takes a very long time...  Is there a fsck or something out there?

This happened when I rebooted during a compile-- apparently the
lattice 5.01 patches have some nasty bugs that lead to infinite
compiles...
