Is there a fsck or something out there? Well, you can use Sectorama or another sector editor to trace down the problem manually, but it is tedious and requires some knowledge of the file system. The way you mentioned, copying everything and reformatting, is probably the easiest way if you don't feel up to exploring the directory structure. It isn't the formatting that takes the time, because you can use the QUICK option in FORMAT. If you have another partition that will hold all your data from the trashed one, it's a fairly quick process to copy/format/restore.
