- 	Assume <name> is a _plain_ file
- 	Then ls <name>/. results in
- 	'<name>/.'   !!!
- 	That is : what ought (?) to be a directory (<name>/.), and
- 	by the way non-existing as such, is accepted whereas
- 	<name>/.. is not accepted.

Maybe it's for compatibility with Aegis.  /com/ld works for both foo/.
and foo/.. where foo is an ordinary file.
