It is taken from the Technical Introduction to the Apple IIGS publication. "At one time, Apple provided an RGB adaptor card and an RGB monitor, the AppleColor (TM) 100 monitor, for the Apple II. Using that system, Hi-Res and Double Hi-Res color displays were restricted to a horizontal resolution only 140, a restriction that does not apply to the Apple IIGS. Note that an AppleColor 100 Monitor requires separate digital signals (as opposed to the Analogue RGB on the IIGS), so it will not work on the Apple IIGS." The Sony RGB monitor is compatible with the II GS analogue RGB so that I don't think that the Apple RGB adaptor card would be suitable.
