In the December? (most recent issue, has editor choice software '88)  there
is an add near the back of the magizine for a company selling used atari
systems.  They sell the 1040+ st for $719.  From the picture it looks like
it has the DS/DD drive in the CPU box.  Since I posted the original article
dont consider this an answer to the question.  I am still wondering exactly
what it is.
