It attempts to provide services similar to those provided by init, getty, and login: prompt for login and password, authenticate the login, and run a "session." No vendors are shipping release 3 yet, as far as I know. You can get X11r3 sources from X sources system expo.lcs.MIT.EDU, reachable via the Internet. They're pretty huge, though, so ask around to see if any of your friends have it on their machines (and then get just xdm and the pieces you need for it). Judging from the man page, it looks like you need either an X guru or a lot of persistance to get it on its feet. One of the more adventurous wizards nearby is running xdm on his Series 300 and it looks pretty cool. -- bd
