I'll retract this statement, since I just now found several other
instances of /dev/tty getting messed up in exactly the same way.
So now I suspect some script or application that is doing it.
Curiously, /dev/tty seems to be linked to /dev/syscon and /dev/systty.
This is clearly the doing of some misguided script.

Clues/hints appreciated.
