They use it to scan pictures for use in newsletters and brochures and to scan resumes which are converted into text with some great OCR software. It's been a real boon to his business, saving hundreds of hours of retyping resumes and saving lots of money because they don't have to deal with a printer for the newletter photos. The HP Scanjet comes with a SCSI interface (buy your own cable) and scanning software (both as a standalone application and as a desk accessory). I don't remember the technical details in terms of scanning quality but I think the HP Scanjet and Apple Scanner are about the same. (BTW, I'm trying to give an objective evaluation even though I work for HP. My old roommate works for Apple so I'm pretty pro-Apple. Besides, they throw better parties.)
