  The incantation you require to avoid mounting the internal HD is

  Insert the startup disk before the power is on
  or before clicking in the restart dialogue box.
Then
  Hold down the option, command, shift and delete keys until the
  smiling mac appears.

  Facing east on one leg is optional.
