question 1:       vertical braces...

                  on page 51 of the LaTeX book by Leslie Lamport resides
                  a description about horizontal braces.  Is it possible,
                  to extend the concept to vertical ones?  If so, how?



question 2:       "sideways text"

                  in a picture there may be the need to write text along
                  a non-zero slope, can this be done within the LaTeX
                  kingdom?  If not, what is a reasonable alternative?
