You may wish to check out the last few issues of Circuit Cellar INK which 
has a had a running series of articles on processing of data from weather 
satellites.  
By the way, I recommend INK highly; as of this month, it's Steve 
Ciarcia's sole publishing vehicle, and the other articles are all very 
well written and of high technical content.
