You need to #define X11 in config.h in addition to HAVE_X_WINDOWS to build for X11. Otherwise, you are building for X10R4. For best results, use GNU Emacs 18.52 with the ver-18.52.diff patches applied. Prior versions of GNU Emacs (starting with 18.50) had very experimental support for X11.
