For example, all ARPANET traffic would oscillate between MCLEAN-MB.DDN.MIL and CAMBRIDGE-MB.DDN.MIL with the gateways redirecting to each other. Can you please tell us when this happened, or whether it still goes on? If it is the current version, then there may be some configuration problem. If it was a previous version, you may have been bitten by a transition between versions, or an old load-sharing table. Was this problem noted at the host you sent mail from, that is, 26.0.0.18 radc-multics.arpa? Can you tell whether the redirects you received were the subtype 'net' or subtype 'host'? Would your host act differently based on this distinction? In general, if you find such a 'smoking gun' type of problem, this one or another, please call the NOC, 800-492-4992, and be prepared to report times and explicit addresses.
