How do you reconcile /etc/hosts, yellow pages, and named?

Some of our customers want yellow pages.  Some want a named.  And some
of them are happy with /etc/hosts and probably don't want anything more
complicated/fragile than a small /etc/hosts file.  How can we offer
yellow pages and named at the same time?  How can we make everybody
happy?

Pointers to specific RFCs and software welcomed.
