OS-9 is designed for real-time work and can even be ROMmed, once you get your stuff working right. It's also pretty nice to work with in most cases (looking quite a bit like UNIX[tm]). I know the U of A physics got a stack of them to do (student) experiment controls, though I'm not sure that they all run under OS-9.
