about changing around Apollo memory boards:

Currently, for the DN3xxx & DN4xxx series workstations, there are 4 different
types of memory boards. Each type of memory board is designed to fit into 
a specific family of macnines. There is some overlap of these families and
allow for limited interchanability. Within each type of memory board there
are two different sizes.

The types and machine families are:

1) original memory bords, come in 1 Mb & 2Mb sizes, fit DN3000 & DN3010
    machines, fit no other machines. (used 256 Kbit chips)

2) first large boards, come in 4 Mb & 8 Mb sizes, fit DN4000 machines,
    not reccomended for other machines. (used 1 Mbit chips)

3) second large boards, come in 4 Mb & 8 Mb sizes, fit DN3500, DN3020
    machines. (used 1 Mbit chips)

4) page mode boards, come in 4 Mb & 8 Mb sizes, fit DN3550, DN4500, 
    DN3020, DN3500 machines. (used 1 Mbit page-mode chips)

Note that boards from the first group (DN300) will NOT interchange with
any other group. The DN3550 & DN4500 must have page-mode boards & they
must be installed in pairs. There is a booklet from Apollo that spells
out all of this in more detail: "Installing Memory in the Domain Personal
Workstations and Servers" (Order No. 10615). This booklet comes with
new memory kits or can be ordered from Apollo.

There is a possiblity that boards in the 2nd & 3rd groups will interchange,
Apollo has not said that they would. Try it at your own risk.
