Before a zillion inexpensive clones that work just as well as the Hayes Smartmodem were advertised in every mail order catalog, I spent (what today is) an embarrassing amount of money on a real Smartmodem, AND I have the manual right here... >switch settings. You want switch 2 UP and switch 3 DOWN to get the modem to respond to commands with an English word. >my current switch settings (switches 1-7 accessible removing the front panel): > >up down down up up up up down > >(it's not marked which is on and which is off) Up and down each have a meaning on most of the switches, so "on" and "off" wouldn't really make sense for some of them. I recommend the factory settings for use with just about every flavor of Apple 2 and Apple 2 commware (SOFTERM can make use of carrier detect - switch 6 - but it doesn't have to be set that way, and I prefer the factory settings even with SOFTERM). I just popped the front off my Smartmodem to make sure I AM in fact using all of the factory settings with my //c (I am). down up down up down down up down Switch Function 1 DTR (pin 20), down = true 2 results code, up = English, down = number if switch 3 is down 3 echo results code, down = yes 4 echo characters while in command state, up = yes 5 auto answer incoming calls, up = yes 6 CD (carrier detect), down = true 7 phone jack, up=RJ11 (modular jack) down=RJ12,RJ13 (multiline) 8 recognize "AT" command, down=yes Switches 2,3,4, and 5 can be changed by software (AT commands), the others can't be altered by software.
